Homesteading

Homesteading isn’t about having acres and acres of land and lots of animals. Homesteading is about wanting to live more sustainably, grow your own food, live .simply and back to the basics. Discover 7 amazing homesteading projects for beginners.

Homesteading For Beginners

You can start homesteading in your backyard, in your apartment on your acreage or on a rented community plot. Homesteading is about going back to the basics of growing your own food, baking your own bread and doing things yourself.

Starting A Homestead

We started homesteading when we moved into our little yellow farmhouse. I have always had a love for gardening. I remember being a little girl playing in my grandfathers garden picking peas and blueberries. Not caring how dirty I got but how full the bowls were and what else was ready to harvest.

New Homesteaders

Years went by and I became a city girl longing for dirt between my fingers not an over priced latte. So we moved our family to the edge of farm country to a tiny yellow farmhouse with mountain views and farm fields for neighbors.

We set up raised beds in our front yard, bought mason bees and read every homesteading and gardening book we could get our hands on. I learned how to make gluten free sourdough bread and preserve the bounty of the garden.

How To Create A Homestead

We created an urban homestead on our small city lot simply by wanting to be more self sufficient, growing our own food, baking our own bread, taking the time to preserve and cook from scratch. Embracing the self sufficient lifestyle. And if we can do it so can you.

Starting A Homestead With No Money

Start your homestead where you are. Grab a few pots and plant tomatoes or salad greens. Learn how to make fresh bread because nothing tastes better than fresh out of the oven bread.

Shop your local farms and ask questions. Learn what grows well in your area. Read a few sustainable living books. Build a raised garden bed out of used wood. Start composting or worm farming your kitchen waste.

Backyard Homestead Ideas

Honestly, I think a backyard homestead is the perfect place to be. Raised garden beds full of herbs, vegetables and tomatoes. Chickens to provide your family with eggs. Mason bees or honey bees pollinating the fruit trees. Medicinal flowers and bouquet flowers growing in the cottage garden. I think an urban homestead is a great place to be.

Homesteading Skills

Some really simple, basic homesteading skills to learn for beginners include gardening, learning how to make compost, baking sourdough bread, DIYing your own natural cleaners and embracing slower living.

DIY Homesteading

Doing it yourself, your way. Homesteading comes in all different shapes and sizes. You could be homesteading in an apartment in the city, on acreage or in a backyard. Your homestead may have animals or simply grow vegetables. Or you may make bread and cheese from scratch and grow your own mushrooms. Every homestead is different.

Homesteading Skills To Learn

Homesteading not matter your size or location is a life long learning experience. Once you have learned one thing another door opens full of opportunities. For example maybe you have laying hens and next you want to try raising other animals. Or maybe your garden is doing amazing and you want to branch off into growing market flowers.
